AR is celebrating new libraries (as well as other buildings for books) this year and will give an award to the best design. They have a shortlist of the 15 most exciting and creative buildings built from January 2013. The properties are from all over the world, ranging from London to Australia. The designs are stunning examples of public and commercial architecture.
The buildings on the list are very diverse. They include university libraries, bookshops and also repositories. The award will go to a cutting edge project with a great design. The winner will be featured in the end of year issue of AR.

What other projects are on the shortlist?
Librairie Avant-Garde – Songyang, China
This public library and bookstore is awe-inspiring. It is in a very distinct village hollowed out of cliff. The design suits the area because it abides by the local principles.
Green Square Library and Plaza – Sydney, Australia
A stunning underground library with a six storey glass tower and beautiful plaza on former swamp land. The construction needed advanced engineering techniques.
Dokk1 – Aarhus, Denmark
This beautiful building is part of a much wider regeneration that is turning the former industrial dockside into a city space. The design is attractive and intelligent as well as highly interactive.
More Than Just a Library – Siem Reap, Cambodia
The Books and Cubes learning spaces are eye-catching and ensure a higher quality of education. They sit on a primary school campus and can be used in all weathers. This is a real community project because local villagers helped with the construction.
