BD and British Land have recently contacted four companies who were BD Architect of the Year winners or finalists. They want them to develop plans for the Canada Water project. This includes our own company, Coffey Architects. We were all chosen from a longlist of notable practices. Our objective is to work up blueprints for the new town centre’s Cuts area.
The site borders the new town square and high street. It includes retail at the bottom level and commercial at the top. Something we must do is acknowledge a series of challenges. For example, we have to figure out how to reconcile varied and small-scale retail frontages in the Cuts. In addition, we need to discover how we can fashion a sense of richness and intimacy inside a huge commercial scheme.
The masterplan
Southwark Council submitted the masterplan back in May. Within, there is a new retail centre that’s roughly the size of Leicester Square. Additionally, there are 3000 new public and leisure spaces, offices, and homes.
The four practices shall present their plans to a panel at a session at BD Live. This is a conference for the experts of the construction industry. BD is hosting it during November in London. Every practice will collect a £7,500 honorarium. Furthermore, British Land shall judge suggestions and ask architects to advance them further.
