New data from the United Nations gives us an accurate idea of which cities in the world currently have the biggest populations. We can also see their current situation in terms of growth. These massive metropolises need the most work to sustain them and ensure they can cater for the huge number of people.
The data finds that Tokyo, Japan is the most populous city in the world. It has over 37,000,000 residents. Amazingly though, the population is actually shrinking. It has dipped by 0.21% since 2022.
Second on the list is Delhi, India. It is home to over 33,800,000 people. The city is a massive hub for employment, home to lots of massive commercial architecture, so it attracts a huge number of residents. Growth in the last two years has been 2.63%.
Third on the list is Shanghai, China. Its population is over 29,800,000, getting close to exceeding the 30 million mark. Recent growth has been 2.25%. There are also 4 other cities from China in the top twenty.
Taking the fourth spot is Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is getting very close to the 24,000,000 mark after 3.13% growth since 2022.
Finally, rounding out the top five is Sao Paulo, Brazil. It has had quite modest growth of 0.83% in two years. The population is well over 22,800,000 though.
The biggest growth rate of the top 20 biggest cities is Kinshasa in DR Congo. It has seen its population increase by 4.39% since 2022. As a result, today it is home to over 17,000,000 people.
