Vertical farming for empty commercial space

Many big cities have been struggling with empty offices and shops for the last few years. A combination of things is to blame, including the rise of online shopping, covid, and businesses wanting high spec offices. The result is a sad one, with vacant buildings and a sea of signs looking for tenants. However, there can be new life for a lot of this commercial architecture. Sometimes it just takes a little creativity.

Farming

One of the most interesting ideas is to use the space to produce crops. A lot of people might say this is impossible, but it can work. Vertical farming with modern hydroponic equipment can turn any space into an urban farm. More impressively, the farms can be incredibly productive and efficient.

The idea with vertical farming is you grow crops vertically, using several layers. This is more effective than traditional horizontal farming that can only have one layer on the ground. As a result, you can grow far more produce for the same footprint.

You can use a variety of different buildings for this kind of farming. For example, you can find massive warehouse style structures that are in essence just giant greenhouses. Or you can have small operations in shipping containers or smaller spaces. All you need is to ensure you can control the climate, including temperature, humidity, and light. You can then have systems to deliver water and nutrients efficiently to the crops.

The most impressive thing here is vertical farming can be better for the environment. You can grow the crops while using resources efficiently and sustainably. There isn’t a risk of things like water loss or nutrients leeching into the soil rather than going to the crops. Plus, there is no soil damage and no reliance on fertiliser.

A great example

Commercial architectureBack to the idea of converting commercial architecture into urban farms, there are a number of interesting projects out there. One of the most notable recent ones is Calgary Tower.

The landmark building has a great history. It was built in the 60s as part of an urban renewal project. When it was complete in 1968 it was the tallest building in the city and only beaten in height by skyscrapers in Toronto. It also became a symbol of the 1988 Winter Olympics when a gas cauldron was added to the top, turning it into a giant torch.

The Tower is still a popular spot today. In fact, there is an annual stair climbing race for charity with racers facing a climb up 802 stairs. There is an observation deck, revolving restaurant, shop, and a theatre. Plus, there are various other events during the year.

Sadly some of the commercial space in the building was vacant. That was until AgriPlay took it on to use for vertical farming. The project began last summer, and now farms are producing tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and more. It is a fantastic new use for the space, and could inspire other projects around the world.
