The record breaking RIBA 2017 London Regional Awards shortlist

RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) recently published the shortlist for the 2017 London Regional Awards. The list includes an incredible 85 projects scattered all across the capital. This is an increase of 17 over 2016, setting a new record. The diversity of the works is also more astonishing than ever. Residential, public and commercial architecture are all represented, showcasing the depth of skills and creativity in the industry.

Work on creating the shortlist was challenging for the team at RIBA. An impressive 215 schemes were entered for consideration, 30 more than in 2016. This number was gradually reduced until the current list was arrived at.

The list of 85 projects is so large that Architects Journal had to release it in two parts to include images of each one. You can browse them all on their website. The names behind the works include previous Stirling Prize winners as well as globally renowned firms.

At Coffey Architects we are proud to feature on the list twice, and for remarkably different projects. The Science Museum Research Centre was a great project and we put our all into creating a thoughtful design that ticked all of the right boxes. Hidden House (not to be confused with the project by LTS that also made the shortlist) is a residential project we are immensely proud of.

Each of the 85 projects will be visited by a jury from RIBA over the course of April. They will critique the work and make their decisions on the winners before the awards ceremony on 22nd May.

We are excited for the jury visit and the awards ceremony. Regional winners will again be put forward for a National award later in the year. Those who successfully attain an award at this second stage will progress again, standing a chance of taking home the 2017 Stirling Prize.

We recommend you take a look at the Architects Journal articles and see all of the wonderful projects that have made the shortlist. We are sure you’ll be impressed by the diversity and talent they showcase.
