There was a time in the UK when local libraries were the heart of their communities. They were busy places for people to borrow books, learn, use tech, and socialise. However, today many are struggling. Hundreds are now closed, and many others only have narrow opening hours. But, there is a chance to save them with some reimagining and updates. We want to have a look at this today, then if you need help with any kind of commercial architecture, you can speak to us.

As we said, local libraries were at one time really important. In 2000 RIBA even gave the Stirling Prize to a local library, celebrating the fantastic design. There was praise for the “fun and colourful design”, green credentials, and use of space.
Sadly, the footfall at many libraries fell massively in the last few decades. As computers became more accessible and the internet flourished, people could do more from the comfort of their own homes. So, they did not need to go to the local library as much. Unfortunately, it became difficult for many of them to remain open.
Surprisingly, although footfall levels were down, attitudes towards local libraries were strong. Those using them had a passion to keep them open. Even those who didn’t use them generally did not want to see them go. So, what is the solution?
A modern library
Ideas from other pieces of commercial architecture apply really well to libraries. For example, the creation of mixed use space is fantastic. Ensuring a local library has a range of spaces for different activities can reinvigorate it. For example, there could be the main areas for borrowing books as well as additional things like learning rooms, cafes, dance studios, sports halls, and more. Flexible meeting space can be especially good.
The most important thing here is to engage with the local community to see what they need. Are their local groups or businesses that would benefit from new space in the library building?
Good design is absolutely essential here though if you want to be successful. Different spaces can have wildly differing needs. For example, some may need specific types of flooring, differing levels of daylighting, and different tech. Some spaces will need to be closed and private while others can be open. Think about all of this and ensure everything can exist symbiotically in the building.
It is also a really good idea to think about accessibility. The key to making local libraries successful is to ensure anyone can use them easily. Think about step free access and make sure you have facilities to cater for different needs.
Masoro Learning & Sports Centre in Rwanda is a really amazing example of how good a library can be. The rural setting means the building needs to provide a massive array of facilities. It does this effectively, including the library, classrooms and tech education spaces, exercise space, sports facilities, and more. There are community spaces outside too, including a football pitch, a basketball court, and outdoor theatres. The library is a thriving piece of the community.
Designing amazing commercial architecture
At Coffey Architects we really appreciate the power different buildings have. They just need the right design. Engaging with users from the outset can help to achieve this.
We have plenty of experience specifically with libraries. In fact, some of our favourite projects have been designing them. We can ensure they suit their main function as well as any additional uses.
