In our previous article we discussed sun protection and the Walkie Talkie tower in London. In this one we would like to consider the Shard and how they created a unique piece of commercial architecture that excels both in terms of sun performance and energy efficiency whilst also bringing the ideas of the architect to life.
Naturally the sun is going to be an issue when you create a 310 metre tall building that is designed to be a continuous shard of glass. The facade needed to contend with the exposure to sunlight and meet the regulations for London. The architect also wanted it to be able to reflect the clouds when they floated by in the sky.
To achieve the above an active facade was created. It features low reflectivity glass that ticks all of the right boxes, including reducing the glare and allowing the reflection of the clouds. It has been combined with automated blinds throughout the property that help to protect inhabitants when the sun is particularly bright.
The Shard shows just how far facade technology has come in recent years. As a result of the developments many things can be achieved that would have been previously impossible. For example larger pieces of glass can be used, different coatings can be added to the material to provide specific benefits, and multiple layers of materials can also be employed when necessary. As a result the facades achieve incredible results in terms of performance and aesthetics.
Commercial architecture can now feature 100% glass facades as a result of the advances in technology and materials. This has had a big impact on designs and the energy efficiency of properties.
At Coffey Architects we understand the value of getting the facade of each property perfect, ensuring it suits the requirements of the client and the regulations for the area. We can create fantastic designs, utilising carefully selected materials to achieve the right results. Whether the property needs to blend with surrounding buildings by using the same type of stone or a modern, contemporary look is preferred, we can deliver it.
