Choose materials to combat the elements and suit the location

For architecture to be successful, whether it is a home or a business premises, the design must consider the location and conditions. The shape of the building, layout, and even the materials that are used will all need to reflect these two things. If they don’t it could result in huge issues.

So how do you create a design that is able to deal with the diverse array of different weather conditions? The key is to choose materials that are durable and have the characteristics to deal with direct sunlight, rain, wind, and even ice and snow. Finding materials that can deal with each of these different elements, whilst also delivering aesthetic benefits, can be tough but it isn’t impossible.

One thing that can be done is to combine different materials effectively. For example a material such as brick or concrete can be used for the building and then additional elements such as metals and timber can be used to clad the property. The end result is a structure that will withstand everything the weather has to throw at it and still look fantastic.

At Coffey Architects we have a lot of knowledge and experience with different materials. Whenever we create a design, be it residential, public, or commercial architecture, we look closely at the setting, the conditions, and the requirements of the client. That way we can carefully select the right products to use.

If you take a look at the projects on our website you can see just how diverse the range of different materials we use is. We even explore lesser utilised ones such as zinc when necessary. Our aim is always to produce the best results, even if it involves taking a lot of time to explore materials and their feasibility. In addition we can look at how each one will impact the budget for the project.
