A view we have always encouraged when thinking about architecture is for people to think in terms of space rather than rooms. It’s important to break free from the mindset which says a building must have a specific amount of rooms in it. Looking beyond this means you can focus instead on the overall level of space available and the purpose. This allows the design to meet your wishes and requirements.
An interesting challenge which influences this is when, to slightly contradict our view, there is an absolute necessity to dedicate both space and rooms to a specific function. This is a matter which would normally affect commercial architecture.
In respect of design values, it can be quite often the case that purpose dictates form. By this we mean that the commercial ventures which will be carried out in a building – whether it’s production, retail or administrative – means that for a number of fixed reasons certain features and rooms must exist. As architects it is essential that we act in a way that is informed of this, and incorporate it into our work.
With the above in mind, one is then free to do what we advocate – think about space. The essential features, rooms and use of space which cannot be changed should not be allowed to dominate thinking and design. If those factors are accepted, then it remains the case that you can think in terms of space, and work with us to plan the greatest use of what is left. A shorter version of what we’re saying is don’t build around the requirements, rather take a more positive approach and explore what can be built because of them.
Our approach is one which delivers the essential functionality required in a commercial building whilst allowing for a substantial amount of freedom in design and innovation. Commercial architecture must meet the business’s requirements, but it also must reflect the spirit, strength and ethos of the business which will occupy it. We work with you to ensure that both your standard requirements and unique vision are embodied in the design we deliver.
