How does the shape influence architecture?

When you look at a piece of architecture, no matter what kind of building it is, you will generally be considering the shape. Shapes are very important and can have an impact on various aspects of a project. Therefore it is important to choose the right ones for each structure. When it comes to commercial architecture, this is even more important.

Square and rectangle

Commercial architectureMost buildings will be square, rectangular, or a combination of the two. Designers and builders favour these shapes for some very important reasons. For example, it is generally faster and easier to build in these forms. They also tend to result in the most usable floor space.

Perhaps the biggest advantage with these shapes is the lower costs. It is easier to reconcile them and that can result in the use of fewer materials. In addition, it can reduce waste. On top of this, the 90 degree angles are stronger and load bearing walls with these shapes can be stronger. These are all crucial for commercial architecture.

Triangle

While most people favour the two shapes above, when it comes to structural strength nothing can compete with the triangle. It is the best option because the joint angles mean it is impossible to distort the shape without disassembling one of them. In fact, usually the way to add more strength to a square or rectangle shape is to use a support to split it into triangles.

If a structure needs to be able to bear more loading, triangle is usually the best way to go. Luckily, it is also relatively cheap to build with triangles.

Circle

The most complex shape for a building is a circle. It can be harder to design this kind of structure but the rewards for a successful one can be impressive. For example, the rounded walls mean the building requires fewer building materials. The curve can also offer more wind resistance.

While it can be hard to design an entire structure as a circle, just look at the HQ of Apple Inc, Apple Park, it can be an impressive feat. However, if it is too difficult, architects could use semi circles instead. They can be good options for windows and arches.

Talk to us about commercial architecture

Coffey Architects is a team that loves designing buildings for businesses. It can be very exciting to learn their goals and design something to account for their brief. In addition, it is great to see how they want the shape to represent their business.
